Special Presentation: Eugene White, Painter of Vintage Florida
Eugene White (1913–1966) – A graduate of the Ringling School of Art, Eugene White devoted his life to painting the world around him—from Florida’s working waterfronts to rural Midwestern farms. His impressionist works capture vivid light and human warmth, portraying the daily lives of fishermen, farmers, and neighbors with empathy and color. Celebrated in national juried exhibitions, White’s art reflects both the landscape and the spirit of Sarasota’s mid-century moment.
Annie Bixleris a lifelong steward of art, story, and place. The daughter of celebrated artist Eugene White, Annie’s connection to Sarasota began in 1948, when she spent her winters here while her father studied at the Ringling School of Art on the GI Bill. Surrounded early by creativity, color, and craftsmanship, Annie absorbed the artistic spirit that would shape her life’s journey. A proud Sarasota native, Annie is a graduate of Sarasota High School, Manatee Junior College, and the University of West Florida. She raised her two children in Sarasota before expanding her horizons to the Carolinas, where she built a series of successful business careers. When grandchildren entered the picture, Annie’s story came full circle as she returned to Sarasota—carrying forward her father’s artistic legacy, sharing his vibrant paintings and the stories behind them, keeping his creative journey alive for new generations.
