Art Talk: "Seven Sacred Pauses"

Art Talk: "Seven Sacred Pauses"

During the month of March, the Arts Advocates Gallery presents Seven Sacred Pauses with poet Teresa Carson and visual artist Leslie Butterfield.

We present this art talk in conjunction with the exhibit, with Stephenie Frasher interviewing the artist and poet.

Seven Sacred Pauses, a cross-disciplinary collaboration between visual artist Leslie Butterfield and poet Teresa Carson, was inspired by Art in Common Places. This nonprofit organization grew out of conversations between these two friends about not only to the debilitating isolation experienced by artists of all genres during the COVID-19 lockdowns, but also about the great need for art during traumatic times. At the core of Art in Common Places are the six-week long collaborations between visual artists and poets that result in a new image and a new poem. Broadsides and postcards are created from this new work and placed in locations such as car washes, libraries, senior citizen housing, and mental health facilities throughout Sarasota County.

Art in Common Places was in full swing in 2021 when another type of trauma shook American society. As shouting replaced civil discourse on the national landscape, Butterfield and Carson, feeling the need to address the lack of “listening,” that, in many ways, seemed to be at the root of the much of the discordance, decided to focus on the act of close listening through a creative collaboration similar to those done for Art in Common Places. The Seven Sacred Pauses project is based on a contemporary non-sectarian version of the traditional monastic tradition of praying at set hours during the day and night as a reminder that the spiritual life is not separate from physical life. Seven Sacred Pauses uses this structure to focus on the art of listening not only to the world around us, but also to each other. Over a three-year period, Butterfield and Carson created seven paintings and seven poems that will be on exhibit at the Arts Advocates Gallery. The poems and the paintings were created in tandem – a true collaboration – and, therefore, influenced and changed each other.
