Poetry 101

July 13, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Arts Advocates Gallery, The Crossings at Siesta Mall, 3501 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 119, Sarasota, FL 34239

Fee: $20

Poetry, at its heart, is a never-ending, ever-expanding conversation made up of many voices. In this workshop, you’ll begin to learn how to listen to that conversation by close-reading a poem or two and adding your voice to it by writing a poem or two. If you’ve ever said “I don’t understand poetry,” then this workshop is for you. If you’re a regular reader of poetry, this workshop is for you. If you’re somewhere between those two poles, this workshop is for you. Attendance is limited to 12 people. Masks optional, vaccination required.

Teresa Carson holds an M.F.A. in poetry and an M.F.A. in theatre, both from Sarah Lawrence College. She is the author of four collections of poetry: Elegy for a Floater (CavanKerry Press, 2008); My Crooked House (CavanKerry Press, 2014), which was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize; The Congress of Human Oddities (Deerbrook Editions, 2015); and Visit to an Extinct City (Deerbrook Editions, 2021). She is the co-founder of two ongoing programs aimed at fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations and putting art into public settings: The Unbroken Thread[s] Project and Art in Common Places.
